The CGSA is now accepting submissions from all Purdue University students for our sixth annual Purdue Graduate Student Conference. The conference will take place during the day on Friday, February 27, 2015 in the Graduate Student Center by the Grant Street Parking Garage.

We invite research related to this year’s theme of Openness and Innovation: Constituting the Core of Communication Across Disciplines. This theme reflects the important role the many branches of communication research can play. However, any research related to communication is welcome. All levels of research are appreciated, including 1st year master’s students to 4th year PhD students, in all disciplines.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, January 26, 2015 at 11:59 pm EST. We are accepting extended abstracts for both individual paper proposals and panel proposals. We welcome abstracts for both completed papers and works in progress. A work in progress could be a research proposal, a project that you have not yet collected data for, or a theoretical paper. Additionally, G.I.F.T.S. (Great Ideas for Teaching Students) are accepted. Multiple submissions from individuals and panel members are allowed. The CGSA conference is an excellent venue to receive feedback on projects, especially before the NCA submission deadline in March. Papers presented at the CGSA conference can also be submitted to another conference.

Please format your submissions in .doc/.docx and submit them via email to CGSAresources@gmail.com. Please note on your submission whether this is a completed project or a work in progress. Once your submission is received you will receive a note of confirmation. Because this is a blind review process, please ensure that your name and all identifying information only appear on the cover page. Acceptance notices will be sent out in early to mid-February.

Abstract guidelines:

  • Clearly written abstract with a clear research area
  • Professionally written in APA formatting
  • 400-600 words excluding references
  • Paper generally matches the overall conference theme
  • Adds to current scholarly knowledge of the topic under study

General Submission Guidelines:

Individual

  • Submit two documents: cover page and abstract
  • Abstract: Remove name from abstract to ensure blind review
    On cover page:

    • Include name
    • Indicate whether this is a completed project or a work in progress
    • Provide four to five key words

You can still submit this paper to NCA (or present a paper already accepted to ICA)

 Panel

  • Submit two documents: cover page and abstract
  • Include panel title and general theme/aims
  • 3-4 papers per panel
  • Abstract for each paper; max of 2,000 words for entire proposal inclusive of references
    • Remove names from abstract to ensure blind review
  • Include names on cover page

G.I.F.T.S.

  • Submit two documents: cover page and GIFTS description
  • GIFTS documents should include: 1) title of the activity, 2) name of course(s) in which activity is intended to be used, 3) rationale justifying the activity and how it connects to course concepts, 4) the learning objectives/outcomes for the activity, 5) a detailed description of the activity including preparation and step-by-step execution, 4) an evaluation of the activity.
  • GIFTS should be formatted as professionally-written lesson plans that can be given to session participants. This includes clearly labeled sections and bullet-pointed or numbered lists.
  • GIFTS submissions should not exceed 1,000 words (inclusive of references) and should have all identifying information removed from the GIFTS description page(s). Please include name on cover page ONLY.
